In their third straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game decided by one goal, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team found themselves on the winning side this time with a 14-13 thrilling victory over La Verne on Saturday afternoon.
After a three week road hiatus, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team returned to the Samuelson Aquatics Center where the Kingsmen hosted their first SCIAC game of the fall. Against the league-leading Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags, the Violet and Gold came up short, falling 8-7 this afternoon.
For the first time of the year, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team faced a SCIAC opponent in league action. At Chapman this morning, the Panthers got the best of the Kingsmen, as CLU fell 12-11 in the conference opener despite a come-from-behind effort late.
Cal Lutheran emphasizes being a well-rounded student by being involved in the community, questioning, learning, and trying new things. The La Habra, Calif. native has taken this and swam with it. Ben Russell is an honors student with a double Math and Physics major who engages in the local and world community through his sport and clubs and their activities.
In the final non-conference tournament of the fall, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team was challenged by a pair of tough teams at the Cal Baptist Invitational, falling 17-9 and 19-6 to Fresno Pacific and the host Lancers, respectively, today.
Over the weekend at the Gary Troyer Tournament co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team went 3-1 with a big win over Division I George Washington as well as a pair of Division III victories against conference foe La Verne and Washington & Jefferson while falling on a last minute goal against DI Fordham.
A new month starts a stretch of five games in three days for the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team. Today CLU hosted Penn State-Behrend at the Samuelson Aquatics Center in the first official Division III contest of the year for the Kingsmen. The Violet and Gold rushed out to an 8-0 lead en route to the 20-5 victory.
