Kingsmen Open Year Against Division I Foes

CLU looking for first win of season

LA JOLLA, Calif. - On Friday the Cal Lutheran men's water polo team opened its 2009 campaign against a pair of formidable Division I programs in No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at the Triton Invitational. The Kingsmen fell to the Waves and Gauchos by 16-3 and 18-2 margins, respectively and will have two more chances to earn a win tomorrow.

CLU senior co-captain Matt Heagy provided the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead in the opening quarter, scoring twice in the period and all three team goals. Goalkeeper Jordan Bouey made 12 stops in the loss.

Against UCSB, Brandon Gross and Wes Lewis scored their first goals of the season. Heagy contributed with three drawn exclusions and as many steals in the loss.

Freshman Danny Mock saw action for the first time in his collegiate career making a team-high three saves in the second half.

Cal Lutheran will conclude pool play against tournament host, Division II school and No. 10 UC San Diego on Saturday at 9:20 a.m. Pending the result the Kingsmen will either face Air Force (CO) or Pomona-Pitzer at 1:20 p.m. or 2:40 p.m.
