Polo Splits Pair of Tournament Contests
Heagy Nets 12 After Two Days of Competition
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s water polo team opened day two of its inaugural tournament with a 14-7 Friday morning win over Fresno Pacific University (FPU), followed by an afternoon loss to Cal Baptist University (CBU), 13-6. Sophomore Matt Heagy scored four goals in both contests and has extended his streaks of four-goal games to three and multiple score contests to five.
FPU looked as though it may win its first official water polo contest its ever played, taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. However, the Kingsmen went on runs of 5-1 and 5-2 in the second and fourth periods, respectively to double up the Sunbirds.
CLU’s Jeff Chaney, Antonio McNeil, Cody Shirk and Heagy all scored multiple goals in the win. FPU’s Tim Kahn led the Sunbirds with a pair of scores.
The Lancers took the lead just 35 seconds in after Alan Ogden scored his first of three first quarter goals and team-high four scores. CBU opened the game on a 7-0 run, lasting over 10 minutes before Heagy got the Kingsmen on the board.
CLU goalkeeper Quinten Beckmann made six saves in the loss.
Cal Lutheran (3-4) will play tomorrow’s opening game and tournament finale, starting with Concordia at 8 am and concluding with Chapman at 7:15 pm.
