Following the departure of several components to the make-up of last year's team, the self-proclaimed underdog Cal Lutheran men's water polo team looks to use a new strategy, low outsider expectations and strong team chemistry as motivation for the upcoming season.
The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team received the No. 8 spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason Division III rankings released earlier today. CLU finished the 2009 campaign in the same position after posting a 9-18, 6-4 SCIAC record last season.
The Cal Lutheran athletics fall programs which include football, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, men's water polo, men's cross country and women's cross country have confirmed their official competition schedules for the 2010 campaign.
Despite the program’s inception in the fall of 2003, the Cal Lutheran men’s water polo team has put together an All-Decade Team that boasts a pair of four time All-Americans. In just six years CLU went from a bare minimum squad size and off-campus pool to an appearance in the SCIAC title game as the Samuelson Aquatics Center played host to the conference championships in 2008.
The CLU athletics department will be honoring its finest athletes over the past 10 years by releasing Cal Lutheran All-Decade Teams throughout the upcoming summer. The reigning SCIAC Champion football team will be the first of 19 programs to have its all-decade team announced, schedule to be released on Monday, May 24.
The Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society held its annual banquet on May 8 and inducted 91 student-athletes for achieving at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA during the 2009-10 academic year. Seven CLU senior athletes were honored after making their fourth appearance in as many years.
Inside Gilbert Arena on Monday night members of all the Cal Lutheran athletic programs were honored for their accomplishments at the 2009-10 Student Athlete Recognition Event.
Four members of the Cal Lutheran men's water polo team qualified for the American Coaches Water Polo Association (ACWPA) All-Academic Team, released earlier this week. Gannon Smith, Matt Baerg, Michael Blanchard and Alex Hacker each received recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom.
