The Inaugural NCAA Division III men’s volleyball season at Cal Lutheran came to a close this weekend as the Kingsmen played two matches in Northern California. On Friday, CLU faced UC Santa Cruz for the fourth time of the season and on Saturday, the season wrapped up with a victory against NCAA Division II Holy Names.

Kingsmen Serve in New York; Earn First NCAA Division III Victory

The Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team traveled across the country to play five matches in three days. The first four came at the Nazareth Purple and Gold Tournament while the final contest was at the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute where the Kingsmen earned their first victory over a Division III opponent in the NCAA era at Cal Lutheran. Three of the squads CLU faced are currently ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-15.

For the final time in its inaugural season, the Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team squared off inside Gilbert Arena where the Kingsmen fell to Ramapo 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22) on Tuesday. The night, however, was about more than just volleyball as CLU teamed up with Cancer Fit Inc. to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness, and 13-year-old cancer survivor, Tyler Thompson, served as the honorary captain for the match.

Kingsmen Play Two at Slug Slam

The Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team played in the 2016 Slug Slam hosted by UC Santa Cruz, falling twice over the weekend. The first match was a five-set thriller between the Kingsmen and Ramapo while the second came at the hands of the Banana Slugs in straight sets.

Returning to Gilbert Arena for the first time since Feb. 20, the Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team nearly pulled off an upset against No. 7 Nazareth, forcing the Golden Flyers to five sets before falling 3-2 (25-19, 27-25, 26-28, 22-25, 15-11) on Wednesday night.

After battling to a fifth set and dropping a heartbreaker at home against UC Merced earlier this season, the Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team earned sweet redemption on the road with a 3-1 (30-28, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16) victory against the Bobcats on Saturday night.

Playing in a neutral site game on Friday night, the Cal Lutheran men’s volleyball team dropped a five set heartbreaker, 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-10) against Benedictine-Mesa (Ariz.) at Hope International University.
