A record-setting group of 99 student-athetes from 19 teams at California Lutheran University were recognized by the school's Scholar Athlete Society at a year-end banquet. All the students maintained a 3.4 GPA or higher for the academic year while particpating as a NCAA Division III student-athlete.
Six of the 10 Cal Lutheran men's athletic programs secured top three conference finishes earning a fourth place result in the 2008-09 SCIAC All-Sports Standings. Points are awarded based on final conference standings for each of the nine SCIAC sports and awarded to each institution respectively.
Senior track and field student-athlete Kyle Hansen finished off his four-year athletic career at the 2009 NCAA National Championships on Thursday afternoon finishing the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.42 seconds. The results placed 13th in the event with the three heat winners plus next five fastest qualifying for the finals.
At the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Senior Athlete Social on May 11 four Cal Lutheran seniors were honored. Summer Plante-Newman and David Iden were selected as the SCIAC Scholar-Athletes while Lindsey Benson and Kyle Hansen were named as the CLU Athletes of the Year.
The season was extended for two Cal Lutheran track and field athletes when senior Kyle Hansen and junior Christa Youngern received invites to the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The duo accounts for two of 688 participants heading to Marietta College in Ohio for the championships on May 21-23.
Along with a third place finish in the conference, the Cal Lutheran men's track and field team collected 14 All-SCIAC spots amongst nine of its athletes. Senior Kyle Hansen led the way with four all-conference qualifying finishes.
At their last meet of the season the California Lutheran University track and field teams competed at the Occidental Invitational on Saturday. With the men's 4x400 team eyeing a qualifying spot in the NCAA Championships it posted the best time at CLU since 1987 and the second best mark in the program's history.
Several Cal Lutheran track and field athletes took part in the first of the two-day Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on Saturday. Toccoa Kahovec and Britlyn Garrett bested their personal bests and school record marks in the 3000-meter steeplechase and javelin, respectively.
