After a lengthy time off due to inclement weather, the Cal Lutheran men’s track and field team returned to action at the 20th Annual Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Burns Track Complex on Saturday.
The Cal Lutheran men’s track and field team features 18 newcomers while bringing back 16 student-athletes from a team that placed sixth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings last season.
Announced at the end of July, the Cal Lutheran men’s and women’s track and field teams were honored with USTFCCCA All-Academic awards while a trio of senior student-athletes finished their respective careers with individual accolades as well.
Senior Michael Bassette and junior Monica Lundgren were recently named 2016 All-American Athletes of the Year as announced by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports Nutrition.
The 2015-16 academic year was a memorable one for the Cal Lutheran athletics department. With 430 student-athletes occupying 460 roster spots, a number of milestones were met including the first NCAA Division III National title in school history, which was achieved by the women’s volleyball team, and an individual national champion crowned to round out the year.
In the final collegiate meet of his career, Michael Bassetterepresented the Cal Lutheran men’s track and field team with a 15th place finish in the Shot Putat the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Track & Field National Championships at Wartburg College on Friday afternoon.
