Senior Michael Bassette and junior Monica Lundgren were recently named 2016 All-American Athletes of the Year as announced by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports Nutrition.
The 2015-16 academic year was a memorable one for the Cal Lutheran athletics department. With 430 student-athletes occupying 460 roster spots, a number of milestones were met including the first NCAA Division III National title in school history, which was achieved by the women’s volleyball team, and an individual national champion crowned to round out the year.
In the final collegiate meet of his career, Michael Bassetterepresented the Cal Lutheran men’s track and field team with a 15th place finish in the Shot Putat the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Track & Field National Championships at Wartburg College on Friday afternoon.
Announced over the weekend by the NCAA, three Cal Lutheran track and field members from the combined men’s and women’s teams earned spots among the nation’s best as the trio will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships from May 26-28, 2016 at Walston-Hoover Stadium on the campus of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Throughout the school year, much of the day-to-day focus is directed towards the successes of the Cal Lutheran athletics programs, but on Saturday, May 7, a group of 150 student-athletes, with their families and friends, gathered inside of the Gilbert Arena for the 13th CLU Scholar-Athlete Society Induction ceremony where academics were praised.
On Thursday, a pair of Kingsmen from the men’s track and field teams travelled to the Redlands Last Chance Qualifier to compete at the Ashel Cunningham Track inside of Ted Runner Stadium for the final regular season meet of the spring.

Back on the familiar Bill Henry Track at Occidental College, the Cal Lutheran men’s track and field team competed against the likes of Olympic athletes and Division I opponents at the Occidental Invitational all day and night Saturday.
