THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Senior day for the Cal Lutheran men’s swimming and diving team saw a trio recognized prior to competition, though the outcome was sour as Pomona-Pitzer defeated the Kingsmen 139-95 marking the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) loss of the season for the host squad.

The senior group included Ricky Mendoza, David Retta and Cesar Vasconcelos who each participated in two seasons for the Kingsmen.

On the diving boards in his final home meet, Mendoza was a double-winner, earning the top spot in the three-meter event with a score of 165.85 before defeating two Sagehens on the one-meter board with a total of 156.75.

The team continued to improve and numerous swimmers produced strong swims with a dozen different student-athletes adding to the team tally today.

Ben Brewer and Jonah Hobbs continued to be one of the strongest distance threats in the league, going 1-2 in the mile with respective times of 16:19.78 and 16:34.16. Brewer is just seconds off an NCAA ‘B’ cut time. Additionally, the newcomer won the 500 free later in the meet by clocking a 4:40.26 while Hobbs recorded a swim of 4:46.12 for third.

Hitting the wall 15 tenths of a second ahead of the second place finisher, Zach Zamecki won the 200 free in 1:45.04. Zamecki also scored in the 200 butterfly behind Thomas Hamburger (2:02.84) in 2:03.17 to place third and fourth.

In the 50 free, CLU took the two through five spots with Thelen McKinna-Worrell edging Liam McCallum by two thousandths of a second as the pair clocked a 22.01 and 22.03, respectively. Jacob Frigard was next with a time of 22.10. The 100 free was a similar outcome with McKinna-Worrell again leading the way in 48.63 for second followed by McCallum (48.94) and George French (49.47).

The 200 Individual Medley (IM) saw Ryan Emili nearly take the top spot, racing into the wall two thousandths of a second behind the victor in 1:58.84, marking another close race. He went on to swim the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.24 for fourth.

Davy Thomas was second in the 200 backstroke, nearly breaking the two-minute mark with a swim of 2:00.91.

The final relay of the meet was a joint effort between Frigard, McCallum, Emili and McKinna-Worrell as the quartet finished second in the 400 Free Relay in 3:14.42. The meet opened with the 400 Medley Relay in which Thomas, Retta, Vasconselos and Jack Hartwell teamed up for a time of 3:47.15 to score fourth place points.

Pomona-Pitzer improved to 6-0 in SCIAC competition.

Cal Lutheran (4-2, 3-1 SCIAC) will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 28 at Caltech where the Kingsmen will compete against both the Beavers and the Stags from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 10:30 a.m.
