THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. The 2016 men’s cross country season for Cal Lutheran will feature a nearly even mix of eight returning runners coupled with seven newcomers as the Kingsmen have high hopes of climbing in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings this fall.

With eight strong runners back on the course after competing both in cross country and track and field for the Violet and Gold last academic year, the team is comprised of mostly upperclassmen for the first time in years.

A young squad has developed into a talented group of runners, paced by junior Timmy Kahovec who averaged an 8K time of 27:39.02 in 2015, representing the fastest pace returning in 2016. A pair of seniors in Miguel Miguel (32:25.10)and Daniel Tustin (30:02.65) will continue to lower race times during his final respective season representing the Kingsmen while the remainder of the junior class, Teerth Patel (29:10.74), Christian Rider (29:57.27) and Zachary Sergey (30:11.10) and sophomores Ben Kishlock (29:13.63) and Michael Miller (29:45.01) all bring more experience and depth to the course this semester.

Joining the squad will be a mix of three true freshmen in Rigoberto Baza Carillo (Chula Vista, Calif.), Henry Friedrichs (Walcott, Iowa) and Connor Richter (Simi Valley, Calif.) as well as first-year cross country runners junior Oscar Alvarado (Citrus College),sophomore Romelo Casanave, senior Alex Johnston and junior Tyler Tveli (Rim of the World High School).

No strangers to collegiate athletics, Casanave out of Stockton, Calif. was a middle distance runner for the Kingsmen track and field team last spring, competing in the 800m and 1500m and Johnston from Eugene, Ore. was part of the 2014 cross country and 2015 track and field teams for Cal Lutheran before sitting out last academic year.

The Kingsmen open their 2016 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Biola Invitational with the starting gun set for 8:00 a.m.
