1976-1977 4x100 Relay Team, Track & Field

Track & Field

Years at Cal Lutheran: 1976-1977

The two-year stretch of 1976 and 1977 was a celebrated time for Cal Lutheran’s track and field program and the 4x100 relay team, thanks to the heart and hard work of team members LaVannes Rose ’77, Lester Haynes ’77, Raymond “Ray” Fields ’81, Edward “Eddie” Rulenz ’76 and Donivant “Doni” Grant ’78.

In 1976, it was Fields, Haynes, Rulenz and Rose who qualified for the National Track & Field Championships held at the University of Chicago. In the finals, the team broke a school record and earned a fifth place finish with the time of 41.93. Based on their outstanding performance, the team members earned All American status.

The following year, Rulenz graduated and Grant stepped on the track with the remaining team members from 1976. Again, they dominated their competition throughout the season and advanced to the finals.

At the 1977 NAIA District III Championships, the team placed first and went on to compete at the NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championships at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. The team blazed a new school record of 41.57, placed sixth in the finals and, once again, all team members earned All American status.

Their record from the 1977 championship race remains in the record books today as the fourth fastest time in CLU history
