As a junior, he was named to the NAIA District 3 Second Team and, as a senior, was selected to the NAIA District 3 First Team, the All-Lutheran First Team and the NAIA All-American First Team. He was a team captain on the track and field team in both his junior and senior seasons and competed in the shot put, discus and hammer throw events.
In 1975 he was named the team’s Most Valuable Field Man and given the Gary Rife Memorial Award. As a junior, he finished in seventh place in the shot put at the NAIA Division II National Meet and one year later finished in eighth place in the hammer throw.
At the time of his induction, he still stood as the school record holder in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.84 meters, set in 1976
