ALISO VIEJO, Calif.– This morning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week 26 Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Kendall Marinesi was named the Softball Hitter of the Week while Mardell Ramirez earned the Women's Water Polo Offensive Player award.
Marinesi was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career. Ramirez earned a SCIAC Athlete of the Week award for the second time, but first in the sport of water polo. She earned a Swimming Athlete of the Week award last year.
Marinesi (Santee, Calif.) paced California Lutheran to a 3-3 week that saw the Regals notch wins of 5-1 and 16-10 over Hiram, and earn a split with Whittier, a 7-6 win. They fell to the Poets, 12-7, and lost a double-header with Manhattanville (7-3, 12-7). The junior infielder was superb at the plate accounting for 40% of Cal Lutheran's offensive production. She was 13-for-23 (.565) with nine runs scored, four doubles, two triples, five homers, and 18 RBI.
Ramirez (Santa Monica, Calif.) lifted California Lutheran to a 2-0 week that saw the Regals claim an 11-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) and a 16-5 triumph over Occidental. The senior attacker notched five goals on six attempts against the Tigers, and added a pair of steals and field block. Against the Athenas, she notched two more steals and another field block to help seal the win.
