ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – This afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week Eight Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Chris Gardhouse, Mardell Ramirez and Andreas Nybo received the award for their performances.
During the week, senior center-defender Gardhouse (Agoura Hills, Calif.) led the Kingsmen water polo team to a 2-0 record. The big win came Saturday as CLU defeated Redlands on the road for the first time in program history with a score of 12-7. He scored four goals in the win. Earlier in the week, he led the Kingsmen with five goals and three assists as they trumped La Verne 13-9. This is Gardhouse's first SCIAC honor of the season.
On opening weekend for swimming and diving, Ramirez (Santa Monica, Calif.) swam to seven event titles, five individual and two relays, at the Cal Lutheran Invitational. The junior was stellar for in the pool as she claimed individual victories in the 50-yard backstroke (28.63), the 50-yard freestyle (24.81), the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.33), the 100-yard freestyle (54.32) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:04.07). She also had a hand in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay which posted a time of 1:41.97 and the 400-yard medley relay squad with a time of 4:09.66.
In his first action with the Kingsmen, freshman swimmer Andreas Nybo won three individual titles and combined with teammates to win two relays. He helped the team win the 200-yard freestyle (1:28.54) and 400-yard medley (3:40.57) relays. Nybo also won the 50-yard breaststroke (27.52), the 100-yard breaststroke (59.18) and the 100-yard individual medley (54.51).
The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
