Another Hirsh Drafted by Houston
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (June 9) – Cal Lutheran pitcher Matt Hirsh was selected by the Houston Astros Wednesday in the 2005 Major League Baseball First–Year Player Draft.
Hirsh was chosen in the 30th round and was the 914th pick overall.
A right–hander from Burbank, Hirsh just completed his junior year with the Kingsmen. He played a dual role this season as he started six games and earned six saves. Hirsh posted a 6–4 record and a 3.27 ERA over 74.1 innings of work. He led CLU in appearances (19), complete games (2), saves (6), opponent batting average (.245), and strikeouts (68).
The 6–foot–5, 230–pound Hirsh was named to the All–SCIAC Second Team in 2005.
Over his three years at CLU, Hirsh has posted a 15–15 record with a 3.60 ERA. He has struck out 193 batters and his career–high 75 Ks in 2004 led the team.
The draft, which took place Tuesday and Wednesday, consisted of 50 rounds. Houston took 19 pitchers and nine position players on the second day, compared to six pitchers and 13 position players on the opening day. With its first round pick (24th overall), Houston selected Tulane left–handed hurler Brian Bogusevic.
Hirsh’s older brother Jason was selected by the Astros in the second round (59th overall) of the 2003 draft. Currently, Jason is playing AA ball with the Corpus Christi (TX) Hooks, where he is 4–5 with a 3.62 ERA in 12 starts.
