Athletes of the Week

Week of September 9, 2013

Gabriel Fernando

In a pair of starts this week, Fernando helped the Kingsmen go 1-0-1 in a pair of SCIAC games. A versatile player, he has demonstrated the ability to step into the most competitive of situations and hold his own as a freshman. He is equally capable of playing in defensive roles as he is in getting involved in the attack. On Wednesday during a league-opening 3-1 victory over Chapman, Fernando earned the start against the Panthers and was instrumental in keeping them off the board in the first half. His technicah and athletic ability make him a key asset for CLU men’s soccer. On Saturday in a double-overtime 0-0 draw with CMS he was again a playmaker, helping the Kingsmen to go unbeaten on the week and improving to 3-1-1 overall.

Hayley Tamagni

SCIAC Athlete of the Week

Hayley Tamagni was named the Emory Invitational MVP after leading the Regals to an upset of the No. 2 Eagles in sweeping fashion (25-23, 25-23, 25-15) on Emory’s home court Saturday to complete a 4-0 weekend and push the No. 7 Regals’ season record to 10-0 in NCAA action. Tamagni earned her way into the starting lineup as a senior following three-years as a reserve. She provided CLU with 29 kills and a .319 hitting percentage over the weekend, adding a pair of service aces, 13 digs and five total blocks. Her serve was spot on all weekend and she came up with some big kills in each game.
